Durham Therapist — Individual & Couples Therapy Near Duke University

I offer individual and couples therapy from my office in Durham’s Ninth Street area, near Duke University, Trinity Park, and Old West Durham. With Harvard training and more than twenty years of experience, I draw on what is most useful in the moment: sometimes practical tools, sometimes the slower work of depth, and usually some proportion of both that we work out together.

Individual Therapy in Durham, NC

My Durham practice specializes in depth-oriented individual therapy for adults navigating:

  • Anxiety and persistent worry that disrupts work, relationships, or sleep
  • Depression and low mood that won’t lift despite your best efforts
  • Grief and loss — both recent and long-carried
  • Life transitions — career changes, divorce, retirement, or relocation
  • Relationship patterns that keep repeating despite your awareness
  • Questions of identity, including LGBTQ+ and multicultural identity

The work is psychodynamic, but not abstracted from present life. We can attend to what is pressing now while also becoming curious about the history, meanings, and protections beneath a pattern. We’ll move at a pace that serves you, in a private, sunlit office where difficult things can be said without being hurried toward resolution.

Couples Therapy in Durham

For Durham couples, I provide a space where both partners can be heard — whether you’re dealing with:

  • Communication breakdowns and recurring conflicts
  • Intimacy and connection issues
  • Trust and betrayal recovery
  • Parenting disagreements
  • Life transition stress (new baby, job loss, aging parents)
  • Premarital counseling

Using Emotionally Focused Therapy and Gottman Method principles, I help couples move beyond surface arguments to understand what’s really happening between them. Learn more about couples therapy.

The Practice

I’ve been practicing in Durham for over two decades, working with individuals and couples who want more than surface-level solutions — professionals from Duke and the medical centers, academics, artists, people in the middle of lives that look fine from the outside. What I offer is a quiet room and no predetermined agenda for who you ought to become: a place where the pace is set by what actually needs saying.

Beyond the clinical work, I’m part of this city — you might see me at The Regulator Bookshop, walking in Duke Gardens, or having coffee on Ninth Street. That connection informs the work; I know the particular pressures and possibilities of life here.

Meeting Online

Not every week leaves room for a trip to the Ninth Street. When it doesn't, we can meet online. I work by secure video with clients throughout North Carolina.
